The Hive is our newly established resourced provision. It was set up in September 2022 and has been established to support the needs of children with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) or SLCN (Speech, language and Communication needs) across Leigh and Wigan.

Our provision is for children from Reception to Year 6 and we can have a maximum of 5 children (2022-23) growing to 8 children (September 2023 onwards). Placements are allocated by the Wigan Local Authority via their Resourced Provision Panel which is held termly.

Our SendCo (Mrs Melling) leads the provision within The Hive and is based in there 5 days a week alongside 2 further staff (Mrs Astley and Miss McCormick). Our Hive staff are given the opportunity to access CPD opportunities to further develop their skills and expertise to ensure we have a high quality offer. They attend regular meetings with the Local Authority and other Resourced Provisions and work closely with outside agencies such as our local special schools.

The needs of the children within The Hive can vary greatly and so provision may look different for each individual. Children will have access to small group support and teaching within The Hive alongside the opportunity to mix with their peers within their mainstream class. This may be within lessons or during more informal times such as break and lunchtime.

Each child will have a timetable which is bespoke to them. This will have been designed to ensure that recommendations outlined by external agencies within their EHCP, such as occupational therapy, educational psychologist etc, can be effectively put into place. As a result, some children will regularly have access to their mainstream class and join in and learn with their peers most of the time and will have interventions, check-ins and sensory breaks as needed. For other children they may spend more time accessing learning and interventions within The Hive and access their mainstream class less often as appropriate to their need.

We run a range of interventions and focussed teaching programmes to support the needs of the children within The Hive –

  • Zones of Regulation
  • Social skills interventions
  • Identiplay
  • Attention Autism
  • Therapeutic Lego Club
  • Well-being Dominoes
  • Social communication groups
  • Fine motor skills interventions
  • Squiggle Wiggle and Dough Disco
  • Colourful Semantics
  • Listening and attention skills
  • Speech and language programmes

School will work with a range of other professionals as outlined within each child’s EHCP. Outside agencies could include:

  • SEND team
  • Educational Psychologist
  • CAMHs
  • Speech and Language
  • Special School Outreach
  • Occupational Therapists

Children are assessed appropriate to their needs. For some children this will be using our whole school tracking system ‘Target Tracker’ and for others this will be using ‘B Squared’ which breaks learning down into much smaller steps.

Allocation of places is decided by Wigan Local Authority and once a placement has been confirmed the child and their family will be invited into school for a visit to meet staff and see The Hive classroom. We will also meet with parents/carers to discuss any concerns and share useful information about their child. In addition, we will visit the child in their current setting and speak to key members of staff and attend any relevant meetings. A timetable will be drawn up for starting school – depending on need this may be a full time timetable from the onset or a phased introduction into school.
